No really. I did call the whip crack smart super security portals and departments in charge of our er, security against our mortal enemy, [as yet un-named]. Dig my recent Fisk on the real life parody that is the National Security website. Enjoy your tax dollars and naive trust in our boob laden authorities at work. But then, they do allow hijab wearing Muslims to er, "man" the x-ray and security pantomime at our airports against terrorist who are 95 to 100 percent, wait for it, Muslims. And then there's Dubai Ports and Etihad Qantas etc, etc, etc... Who are we to judge, eh. Especially stealth jihad.

By "whip crack smart" I mean a beyond belief parody of PC'ism, the disingenuous, the incompetent, the stupid and the skirting of treason by manipulating and omitting harsh facts that put Australia and its people at grave and serious risk. And oh yes, threatening the average citizen with bankrupt laws, if they dare to not play the game and point out the bleeding obvious to the overpaid and unreachable.

So oatmeal sharp really. In short, our major security services are apparently some kind of absurd and profoundly disturbing joke. A gravediggers joke. So keep laughing if you can or call ASIO. Be polite and expect nothing and you'll never be disappointed. The National Security Hotline is waiting for your call, unless it's lunch. Ask for Sir Arthur Streebgreebling. No, not really but you may as well be asking for a pizza delivery or that great new melon peeler you saw advertised.

I said to the little dears that I had hoped that ASIO was better than their reputation, but my hopes were sadly crushed and without ceremony. Now nowhere on the NS website do they mention who the terrorists are, either by name, profile, what drives them, where they are likely to be from, what their goals are and so on ad nauseum.

Now, they were nice enough people for what nice is worth, which ain't much in fact it's nothing security-wise. Though they were snooty, rather unnatural and not straight speaking whatsoever and all but useless. And all but one hung up on me when I asked the utterly basic question "Can you tell me who these terrorists are?" The Attorney Generals Personal Assistant[!] said and I quote as best I can remember, "I can't do that". Why not exactly? Then resign, dear boob.

Colonel Neville: "So you're from National Security and you cannot tell me who these terrorists are but you expect the average citizen to identify them for you and let you know?"

PA: "I'm not prepared to continue this conversation..." [How convenient and ridiculous.]

Colonel Neville: "Then that makes you incompetent or dishonest".

Sound of hung up phone. "Brrrrrrr". Oooh, sooooo chilly!

The first dame I contacted reminded me of the lovely kind ladies who worked at the school canteen when I was a kid. Sadly, dealing in donuts, candy, small change and small children is not my idea of counter-terrorism training. But then in Australia, alleged "counter terrorism" university departments are almost invariably run by Muslim apologists cum taquiyaa pushers and Marxist cum leftist academics. And thus they "advise" our military and government...how to lose. Go figure.

Hell, just trying to get through on the phone was bad enough. When I called the NS and ASIO, the phones kept dropping out and I also got a technical feed recording, then someone else answered then it dropped out again and then I could hear the office background noise! No, seriously. Being a sarcastic satirical kinda guy, I asked them all about the "mysterious terrorists" and how I have a list, and if they could just help me eliminate some of the suspects, I may be able to narrow it down to who they are most likely to be. The terrorists that is.

"Could they be Hawaiian Taoists?" I asked cheerily. "Japanese salary men? Welsh pensioners? Taiwanese motorcycle cops? Red haired kilt wearing Scotsmen? Catholic nuns? Stamp collecting dentists from Pago Pago? Grid iron pros from the Bronx? Italian dairy farmers from Wonthaggi?"

Nope, apparently they couldn't say one way or another. No, really. What I can say for sure, is that these people appear to me to be PC infected idiots who will endanger and ultimately kill us all. No, really. I asked many questions and not one of them could give me a single straight answer on anything except yes, they were the main citizen portal for terrorism unpleasantness. Though this is of course entirely problematic. Professional government twerps do love that inhuman death sentence speak, don't they? You know, the junk that sounds almost polite to the ignorant but is cynical, entirely phony and profoundly insulting to real people.

Colonel Neville: "At the absolute basic, would you say that the NS and ASIO are the main and only places for citizens concerned about terror to go to?"

"Yes". Ok, they answered that one straight as I said but to no avail.

Colonel Neville: "So how can the major portal not name the enemy and be regarded as serious and effective?" No answer beyond rather identical diversions. "I can't say...I'm not prepared to...if you have a specific concern...send in a report..."

Yeah, maybe I should take up tennis or waste a day sending a missive that disappears into the bowels of bureaucracy, is dismissed or at best get me a nice form letter. Or I get arrested for looking into terrorism seriously for over eight years and noticing gee, that it does indeed connect with a very particular religion. Guess which one and win a prize! Yeah, a fucking brain!

I asked if an actual citizen can actually ever get to meet one on one say, any of the faceless drones of the alleged security apparatus? Nope. No dice. Not for the plebs. Simply not done, old boy. All hush hush. Mum's the word. Fall of Singapore and all that. They just accept "reports". Quite. Well, accept one up your nose with a garden hose then.

I could kinda tell that they may never have had ANYONE, ever call their bluff and say gee, is this a joke, are you crap and it's not all a parody, right? Guess not. I had a rather strong feeling too, that they were suppers upon the tit of The Idiot Age newspaper, the ABC and so on. No, really. All the dreary and miserable ineffective fantasy boxes were being ticked off as they driveled in faux response. They said send in any suspicions. All righty then. I will. Yes I said, here's a few.

That on your entire site you never mention the enemy by name. And yet you mysteriously state later that any connecting of terror with any religion is false, wrong and against the law. Gee, who mentioned religion? You did! Coincidence right? Arrest yourself.

By default, any citizen that studies terror seriously using any of the many major best selling books, journals, papers and websites both official, media and private supplying a profound empirical evidential Himalaya on the subject of golly, terror, would have to arrest themselves for noting the bleeding obvious. Gee, suspicious? Hezbollah and Marxist Left flags flying in the CBD is kinda suspicious. And here's my post on that very subject with that fun photo that describes so much about the multiculti dream come true.

The Age newspaper running pieces by Jew hating Islamists and Marxist Leftard traitors and self-loathing Left Jews on a regular basis is suspicious. Even politicians and Police...Yep, suspicious. The ABC, SBS and our universities employing and paying the same people to propagandise the same is again, suspicious.

That none of the major best selling empirical books by well known and respected analysts, writers and journalists on the subject of terror are in the public mind or in the media at all really, is suspicious again. And that anyone who aids or supports in writing, words, actions, deeds or financially etc, is clearly guilty of piracy ie: terrorism, according to the 300 year old international laws of piracy of which Australia is a signatory. And not a single action has been taken on this when offences occur 24/7. Yep, suspicious.

To the Attorney Generals P.A, I said that I was not impressed with the curiously female public face of our silly security services cos' they just won't answer serious questions and just hang up. She answered "I hope you don't include me?"

Oh no, I said. I'm still talking to you obviously. She then proceeded to not answer any serious question and hung up! So yes, you're silly too so you really included yourself, didn't you? Apparently receptionists do a security analysis and profile ad hoc on the phone, make a conclusion and hang up and that's good enough? No name, number or shoe size. Yep, I have suspicions of someones stupidity and on a shocking scale. And all this time I thought it was me!

I wanted to ask if there was ANYONE, anyone at all at the rather absurd and oxymoronic named NS and ASIO that was truly intelligent, honest, informed and had read a book lately if at all, but I didn't get the chance. Big deal. It's just a matter of our life and death. I imagine they all have bunkers. They were absolutely bunkers! Boom tish! Only one didn't hang up on me so kudos to one of the women at the NS. Not much though, is it? It's a little like the embarrassing Chaser prank at the meeting of world boobs. We have to play along that the expensive security and fancy dress with all the right phraseology, is reflective of any known reality and oh so effective, when it ain't when slightly tested.

It's like the dope who thinks they can counter and fight and then you easily just slap them. "I wasn't ready!" they invariably say. That's the whole point, Jim.

The inauthentic fool never is ready. What a joke. See how unprepared the authorities were for the bushfires? They let Marxist Green Leftard policies run rampant for years with an entirely predictable and hideous result. And golly, no warning to thousands. Yeah, it was all Global Warmings fault. Give me a fucking break with that global $cam and uber gravy train.

When the first terrorist attack breaks through in Australia, and by the law of averages they will, they'll say "...no one could have known it would be so er, surprising! We must review! We must wack off!" Hey, just have another interfaith dialogue, bub. It's a great way spread Islam, which again, is entirely coincidental. Oops! I accidentally connected a religion to terror! Don't worry, Islam is not a religion. It's a political project and a total nihilist ideology founded by a pervert and psychopath. Nope, it's not the Attorney General. Think 7th century desert tribal assassin lunatics.

Oh yes, its just come to me! I remember which religion now and who those terrorists are that commit over 95% of global violence. It's ISLAM and they're MUSLIMS. Gee, arrest those bigots at the offical US government National Counter Terrorism Centre now for slandering the people who just happen to be Muslims of Al Qaeda!

Golly gosh and jeepers creepers! I must call the National Security Lukewarmline and ASIO and let them know! ASIO, the Australian Stupid Idiot Organisation. Or maybe I won't and save fifty cents. I'm gonna need it to build my underground headquarters in the High Sierras before the whole shithouse comes down. Here's a thought. If you really care about the millions and millions of ordinary Muslims in Islamic states and elsewhere and many of us do, well maybe it'd be a good idea to be honest about Islam and terror? Take them at their word and actions for example? Crazy enough to work.

And these human beings have no choice where it's invariably compulsory to be a Muslim, and dangerous to be otherwise. And even dangerous to be a Muslim, or not enough or the wrong kind etc, etc, etc. Thus they're victims too of one mans insanity. Thus faithfreedomorg is run by ex-Muslims and others. Yep, save the Muslims. No, the PC don't seem to mind what happens there as long as we don't point it out. How snug. Anyone for official idiocy? You be the judge. God help us all. When I was a boy, I had a fondness for maps. Sorry, that’s from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, but then so were many parts of my sub-Lord of the Flies childhood. What, me resort to hyperbole? Never I say! But you can dig it cos I know you’re hip. My parents were working-class English people, there was no Internet and a very limited access to journals, papers, articles, books and especially great and independent minds. Not so now.

I remember people saying Enoch Powell was well, fill in the ad hominem. I never actually got to hear what he had said, or what and why it was allegedly not true. Nor was their any counter-evidence ever provided. Another telling fact is that the fatuous auto-shouting of "racist!" at Enoch, was a perennial stock in trade of the standard leftard mass comedian of the time. As Chris Hitchen's said, the "George Bush is stupid!" joke is "the stupid joke that all stupid people can laugh at."

This is done by people who wish to be above the problematic gaucheness of unpleasant and harsh facts, while maintaining their stylish moral vanity. The dangerous realities of a brave new suicide by multicultism is after all, largely for those least able to afford to live in a neighbourhood mostly without it. What a coincidence! Just like the one's favoured by those who advocate its unfettered and remorseless advance.

Such accepted mass drivel absolves the said human parrot from ever thinking seriously about anything serious at all. Go figure.

So today I read the entire transcript of Powell's absurdly misquoted speech, so widely judged in absentia of most any critic having read it. The average hack calls it the “rivers of blood” speech, just like the hack before and the one before that ad nauseum.

Powell never says that but quotes eloquently an ancient "Roman", namely Virgil, as shown above. But then “the River Tiber foaming with much blood,” would not fit the paradigm, and is perhaps beyond the intellectual energy level of the average logical fallacy prone and posturing critic.

[Not in the same league of such paid journalistic mediocrity is the absurdly laughable, and as per usual named “Anonymous." Exhibit A as he is known, has been pointlessly posting weakling comments devoid of any sense of self-respect or ability to focus feebly on any actual issue at hand, all apparently to fill in his endless and empty hours. Go figure. But I digress.]

Here's a smilingly presented vid by a Muslim guy on how Muslims are gee, excellent at putting on an entirely different faces for the infidels! No! Really? Who would have thought.. Oh the creeping irony.

Hey, I have done only a little background research on Mr Powell and of course, he missed out on the joy of Islam. [Link to the fab barenakedislam.] So whatever flaws he has, I do only have so much time, what with letting the bath overflow onto the carpet an’ all. No really. What a disaster. Ironically there were rivers of bath water.

But the fact is that I dig this speech. Enoch Powell wrote this in 1968 and he was entirely correct on every count except one: everything is far, far worse than he could have ever conceived of. It's an insane and wilfully deluded idea that the Marxist ideology of PC self-loathing, via the powerful elites false god of multiculturalism, could ever lead to anything but disaster. But then it WAS deliberate, wasn't it?

Reading the speech now, it’s as if it was written in hindsight for a dystopian novel set in a not so distant past about a not so far off future. The cliché is that “the past is a foreign country.” Enoch predicted with astounding clear minded precision, the natural results of a suicidal trajectory that was set in place decades ago. ALL of Enoch's phony critics were completely WRONG, as the political correct ironically always are, while Enoch Powell was completely CORRECT.

The way things empirically are today prove beyond any serious and intelligent doubt, that the present is a literally foreign country and that the future is going to be utterly and viciously alien. Of course there's a negative side too...

'This is the full text of Enoch Powell’s so-called ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, which was delivered to a Conservative Association meeting in Birmingham on April 20 1968.


"The supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evils. In seeking to do so, it encounters obstacles which are deeply rooted in human nature.

One is that by the very order of things such evils are not demonstrable until they have occurred: at each stage in their onset there is room for doubt and for dispute whether they be real or imaginary. By the same token, they attract little attention in comparison with current troubles, which are both indisputable and pressing: whence the besetting temptation of all politics to concern itself with the immediate present at the expense of the future.

Above all, people are disposed to mistake predicting troubles for causing troubles and even for desiring troubles: “If only,” they love to think, “if only people wouldn’t talk about it, it probably wouldn’t happen.”

Perhaps this habit goes back to the primitive belief that the word and the thing, the name and the object, are identical.

At all events, the discussion of future grave but, with effort now, avoidable evils is the most unpopular and at the same time the most necessary occupation for the politician. Those who knowingly shirk it deserve, and not infrequently receive, the curses of those who come after.

A week or two ago I fell into conversation with a constituent, a middle-aged, quite ordinary working man employed in one of our nationalised industries.

After a sentence or two about the weather, he suddenly said: “If I had the money to go, I wouldn’t stay in this country.” I made some deprecatory reply to the effect that even this government wouldn’t last for ever; but he took no notice, and continued: “I have three children, all of them been through grammar school and two of them married now, with family. I shan’t be satisfied till I have seen them all settled overseas. In this country in 15 or 20 years’ time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man.”

I can already hear the chorus of execration. How dare I say such a horrible thing? How dare I stir up trouble and inflame feelings by repeating such a conversation?

The answer is that I do not have the right not to do so. Here is a decent, ordinary fellow Englishman, who in broad daylight in my own town says to me, his Member of Parliament, that his country will not be worth living in for his children.

I simply do not have the right to shrug my shoulders and think about something else. What he is saying, thousands and hundreds of thousands are saying and thinking – not throughout Great Britain, perhaps, but in the areas that are already undergoing the total transformation to which there is no parallel in a thousand years of English history.

In 15 or 20 years, on present trends, there will be in this country three and a half million Commonwealth immigrants and their descendants. That is not my figure. That is the official figure given to parliament by the spokesman of the Registrar General’s Office.

There is no comparable official figure for the year 2000, but it must be in the region of five to seven million, approximately one-tenth of the whole population, and approaching that of Greater London. Of course, it will not be evenly distributed from Margate to Aberystwyth and from Penzance to Aberdeen. Whole areas, towns and parts of towns across England will be occupied by sections of the immigrant and immigrant-descended population.

As time goes on, the proportion of this total who are immigrant descendants, those born in England, who arrived here by exactly the same route as the rest of us, will rapidly increase. Already by 1985 the native-born would constitute the majority. It is this fact which creates the extreme urgency of action now, of just that kind of action which is hardest for politicians to take, action where the difficulties lie in the present but the evils to be prevented or minimised lie several parliaments ahead.

The natural and rational first question with a nation confronted by such a prospect is to ask: “How can its dimensions be reduced?” Granted it be not wholly preventable, can it be limited, bearing in mind that numbers are of the essence: the significance and consequences of an alien element introduced into a country or population are profoundly different according to whether that element is 1 per cent or 10 per cent.

The answers to the simple and rational question are equally simple and rational: by stopping, or virtually stopping, further inflow, and by promoting the maximum outflow. Both answers are part of the official policy of the Conservative Party.

It almost passes belief that at this moment 20 or 30 additional immigrant children are arriving from overseas in Wolverhampton alone every week – and that means 15 or 20 additional families a decade or two hence. Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. We must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependants, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. So insane are we that we actually permit unmarried persons to immigrate for the purpose of founding a family with spouses and fiancés whom they have never seen.

Let no one suppose that the flow of dependants will automatically tail off. On the contrary, even at the present admission rate of only 5,000 a year by voucher, there is sufficient for a further 25,000 dependants per annum ad infinitum, without taking into account the huge reservoir of existing relations in this country – and I am making no allowance at all for fraudulent entry. In these circumstances nothing will suffice but that the total inflow for settlement should be reduced at once to negligible proportions, and that the necessary legislative and administrative measures be taken without delay.

I stress the words “for settlement.” This has nothing to do with the entry of Commonwealth citizens, any more than of aliens, into this country, for the purposes of study or of improving their qualifications, like (for instance) the Commonwealth doctors who, to the advantage of their own countries, have enabled our hospital service to be expanded faster than would otherwise have been possible. They are not, and never have been, immigrants.

I turn to re-emigration. If all immigration ended tomorrow, the rate of growth of the immigrant and immigrant-descended population would be substantially reduced, but the prospective size of this element in the population would still leave the basic character of the national danger unaffected. This can only be tackled while a considerable proportion of the total still comprises persons who entered this country during the last ten years or so.

Hence the urgency of implementing now the second element of the Conservative Party’s policy: the encouragement of re-emigration.

Nobody can make an estimate of the numbers which, with generous assistance, would choose either to return to their countries of origin or to go to other countries anxious to receive the manpower and the skills they represent.

Nobody knows, because no such policy has yet been attempted. I can only say that, even at present, immigrants in my own constituency from time to time come to me, asking if I can find them assistance to return home. If such a policy were adopted and pursued with the determination which the gravity of the alternative justifies, the resultant outflow could appreciably alter the prospects.

The third element of the Conservative Party’s policy is that all who are in this country as citizens should be equal before the law and that there shall be no discrimination or difference made between them by public authority. As Mr Heath has put it we will have no “first-class citizens” and “second-class citizens.” This does not mean that the immigrant and his descendent should be elevated into a privileged or special class or that the citizen should be denied his right to discriminate in the management of his own affairs between one fellow-citizen and another or that he should be subjected to imposition as to his reasons and motive for behaving in one lawful manner rather than another.

There could be no grosser misconception of the realities than is entertained by those who vociferously demand legislation as they call it “against discrimination”, whether they be leader-writers of the same kidney and sometimes on the same newspapers which year after year in the 1930s tried to blind this country to the rising peril which confronted it, or archbishops who live in palaces, faring delicately with the bedclothes pulled right up over their heads. They have got it exactly and diametrically wrong.

The discrimination and the deprivation, the sense of alarm and of resentment, lies not with the immigrant population but with those among whom they have come and are still coming.

This is why to enact legislation of the kind before parliament at this moment is to risk throwing a match on to gunpowder. The kindest thing that can be said about those who propose and support it is that they know not what they do.

Nothing is more misleading than comparison between the Commonwealth immigrant in Britain and the American Negro. The Negro population of the United States, which was already in existence before the United States became a nation, started literally as slaves and were later given the franchise and other rights of citizenship, to the exercise of which they have only gradually and still incompletely come. The Commonwealth immigrant came to Britain as a full citizen, to a country which knew no discrimination between one citizen and another, and he entered instantly into the possession of the rights of every citizen, from the vote to free treatment under the National Health Service.

Whatever drawbacks attended the immigrants arose not from the law or from public policy or from administration, but from those personal circumstances and accidents which cause, and always will cause, the fortunes and experience of one man to be different from another’s.

But while, to the immigrant, entry to this country was admission to privileges and opportunities eagerly sought, the impact upon the existing population was very different. For reasons which they could not comprehend, and in pursuance of a decision by default, on which they were never consulted, they found themselves made strangers in their own country.

They found their wives unable to obtain hospital beds in childbirth, their children unable to obtain school places, their homes and neighbourhoods changed beyond recognition, their plans and prospects for the future defeated; at work they found that employers hesitated to apply to the immigrant worker the standards of discipline and competence required of the native-born worker; they began to hear, as time went by, more and more voices which told them that they were now the unwanted.

They now learn that a one-way privilege is to be established by act of parliament; a law which cannot, and is not intended to, operate to protect them or redress their grievances is to be enacted to give the stranger, the disgruntled and the agent-provocateur the power to pillory them for their private actions.

In the hundreds upon hundreds of letters I received when I last spoke on this subject two or three months ago, there was one striking feature which was largely new and which I find ominous.

All Members of Parliament are used to the typical anonymous correspondent; but what surprised and alarmed me was the high proportion of ordinary, decent, sensible people, writing a rational and often well-educated letter, who believed that they had to omit their address because it was dangerous to have committed themselves to paper to a Member of Parliament agreeing with the views I had expressed, and that they would risk penalties or reprisals if they were known to have done so. The sense of being a persecuted minority which is growing among ordinary English people in the areas of the country which are affected is something that those without direct experience can hardly imagine.

I am going to allow just one of those hundreds of people to speak for me:

“Eight years ago in a respectable street in Wolverhampton a house was sold to a Negro. Now only one white (a woman old-age pensioner) lives there. This is her story. She lost her husband and both her sons in the war. So she turned her seven-roomed house, her only asset, into a boarding house. She worked hard and did well, paid off her mortgage and began to put something by for her old age. Then the immigrants moved in. With growing fear, she saw one house after another taken over. The quiet street became a place of noise and confusion. Regretfully, her white tenants moved out.

“The day after the last one left, she was awakened at 7am by two Negroes who wanted to use her ‘phone to contact their employer. When she refused, as she would have refused any stranger at such an hour, she was abused and feared she would have been attacked but for the chain on her door. Immigrant families have tried to rent rooms in her house, but she always refused.

Her little store of money went, and after paying rates, she has less than £2 per week. “She went to apply for a rate reduction and was seen by a young girl, who on hearing she had a seven-roomed house, suggested she should let part of it. When she said the only people she could get were Negroes, the girl said, “Racial prejudice won’t get you anywhere in this country.” So she went home.

“The telephone is her lifeline. Her family pay the bill, and help her out as best they can. Immigrants have offered to buy her house – at a price which the prospective landlord would be able to recover from his tenants in weeks, or at most a few months. She is becoming afraid to go out. Windows are broken. She finds excreta pushed through her letter box. When she goes to the shops, she is followed by children, charming, wide-grinning piccaninnies. They cannot speak English, but one word they know. “Racialist,” they chant. When the new Race Relations Bill is passed, this woman is convinced she will go to prison. And is she so wrong? I begin to wonder.”

The other dangerous delusion from which those who are wilfully or otherwise blind to realities suffer, is summed up in the word “integration.” To be integrated into a population means to become for all practical purposes indistinguishable from its other members.

Now, at all times, where there are marked physical differences, especially of colour, integration is difficult though, over a period, not impossible. There are among the Commonwealth immigrants who have come to live here in the last fifteen years or so, many thousands whose wish and purpose is to be integrated and whose every thought and endeavour is bent in that direction.

But to imagine that such a thing enters the heads of a great and growing majority of immigrants and their descendants is a ludicrous misconception, and a dangerous one.

We are on the verge here of a change.

Hitherto it has been force of circumstance and of background which has rendered the very idea of integration inaccessible to the greater part of the immigrant population – that they never conceived or intended such a thing, and that their numbers and physical concentration meant the pressures towards integration which normally bear upon any small minority did not operate.

Now we are seeing the growth of positive forces acting against integration, of vested interests in the preservation and sharpening of racial and religious differences, with a view to the exercise of actual domination, first over fellow-immigrants and then over the rest of the population. The cloud no bigger than a man’s hand, that can so rapidly overcast the sky, has been visible recently in Wolverhampton and has shown signs of spreading quickly.

The words I am about to use, verbatim as they appeared in the local press on 17 February, are not mine, but those of a Labour Member of Parliament who is a minister in the present government:

‘The Sikh communities’ campaign to maintain customs inappropriate in Britain is much to be regretted. Working in Britain, particularly in the public services, they should be prepared to accept the terms and conditions of their employment. To claim special communal rights (or should one say rites?) leads to a dangerous fragmentation within society. This communalism is a canker; whether practiced by one colour or another it is to be strongly condemned.’

Only resolute and urgent action will avert it even now. Whether there will be the public will to demand and obtain that action, I do not know. All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.”

...even the pen that you are holding in your hand, the recording instrument in front of you, the light in this room, and the journal in which you work, and many innumerable amenities, which are like miracles for the ancient civilizations. If it were not for the accomplishments of the West, our lives would have been barren. I only look objectively and value justly what I see and express it honestly. Whoever does not admire great beauty is a person who lacks sensitivity, taste, and observation. Western civilization has reached the summit of science and technology.

It has achieved knowledge, skills, and new discoveries, as no previous civilization before it. The accomplishments of Western civilization cover all areas of life: methods of organization, politics, ethics, economics, and human rights. It is our obligation to acknowledge its amazing excellence. Indeed, this is a civilization that deserves admiration.

The horrible backwardness in which some nations live is the inevitable result of their refusal to accept this [abundance of Western ideas and visions] while taking refuge in denial and arrogance."

'Okaz: "Sir, you can admire this civilization as much as you want, but not at the expense of others, especially our own civilization."

Buleihi: "My admiration for the West is not at the expense of others; rather, it is an invitation to those others to acknowledge their illusions and go beyond their inferiority and liberate themselves from backwardness. [Those others] should admit their shortcomings, and make an effort to overcome them; they should stop denying the truth and closing their eyes to the multitude of wonderful achievements. They should be fair towards those nations that achieved prosperity for themselves but did not monopolize it for themselves and instead allowed the whole world to share the results of this progress, so that other nations of the whole world now enjoy these achievements.

Furthermore, Western civilization has given to the world knowledge and skills which made it possible for them, the non-Western nations, to compete with it in production and share markets with it. Criticizing one's own deficiencies is a precondition to inducing oneself to change for the better.

Conversely, to glorify one's backward apathetic self is to establish and fortify backwardness, to strengthen the shackles of apathy, and to eradicate the capabilities of excellence. Backwardness is a shameful reality, which we should resent and from which we must liberate ourselves."

"Western Civilization is the Only Civilization that Liberated Man From His Illusions and Shackles; It Recognized His Individuality and Provided Him With Capabilities and Opportunities to Cultivate Himself and Realize His Aspirations."

'Okaz: "This may be so, and I'm with you in this demand but, sir, would you summarize for us the reason for your admiration of Western culture, so that we can have a basis for discussion?"

Buleihi: "There is no one reason, there are a thousand reasons, which all induce me to admire the West and emphasize its absolute excellence in all matters of life. Western civilization is the only civilization that liberated man from his illusions and shackles; it recognized his individuality and provided him with capabilities and opportunities to cultivate himself and realize his aspirations.

[Western civilization] humanized political authority and established mechanisms to guarantee relative equality and relative justice and to prevent injustice and to alleviate aggression.

This does not mean that this is a flawless civilization; indeed, it is full of deficiencies. Yet it is the greatest which man has achieved throughout history. [Before the advent of Western civilization,] humanity was in the shackles of tyranny, impotence, poverty, injustice, disease, and wretchedness.

"It is an extraordinary civilization, and it is not an extension of any ancient civilization, with the exception of Greek civilization, which is the source of contemporary civilization. I have completed a book on this great extraordinary civilizational leap, titled The Qualitative Changes in Human Civilization. Western civilization is its own product and it is not indebted to any previous civilization except for the Greek one...

It has revived the Greek achievements in the fields of philosophy, science, literature, politics, society, human dignity, and veneration of reason, while recognizing its shortcomings and illusions and stressing its continuous need for criticism, review and correction."

'Okaz: "In your words here, you completely wipe out all the endeavors and creativity of previous civilizations such as the Islamic one, by stating that the West not indebted to it."

Buleihi: "Indeed, it is not, nor is it indebted to any other previous civilization. Western civilization has its foundation in Greece in the sixth and fifth centuries BC; then it stopped in the Middle Ages, but resumed its progress in modern times, when its benefits have come to include all nations.

It is really extraordinary in every meaning of the word - excellence, uniqueness, and novelty...It has components and qualities which distinguish it from all previous and subsequent civilizations.

It is the product of philosophical thinking invented by the Greeks. The Europeans have based themselves on this kind of thinking, especially on its critical aspect, which developed the capability of producing objective knowledge that is always open to review, correction and progress..."

'Okaz: "Some Western thinkers wrote that Western civilization is an extension of previous civilizations. How can you, a Muslim Arab, deny this?"

Buleihi: "When we review the names of Muslim philosophers and scholars whose contribution to the West is pointed out by Western writers, such as Ibn Rushd, Ibn Al-Haitham, Ibn Sina, Al-Farbi, Al-Razi, Al-Khwarizmi, and their likes, we find that all of them were disciples of the Greek culture and they were individuals who were outside the [Islamic] mainstream. They were and continue to be unrecognized in our culture. We even burned their books, harassed them, [and] warned against them, and we continue to look at them with suspicion and aversion. How can we then take pride in people from whom we kept our distance and whose thought we rejected? "As for the question of cultural development, there are two approaches. According to one approach, civilization is the product of a cumulative process. However, this approach is contradicted by the facts of history. According to the other approach, a quantitative change does not become a qualitative one, except through an extraordinary leap. This is the correct compelling approach, which I adopt. Quantity cannot possibly turn into quality spontaneously.

"The only civilization which possesses the ingredients of perpetual progress is Western civilization, with its Greek foundation and its amazing contemporary formation.

Western civilization believes that it is impossible to possess absolute truth and that human perfection is impossible, so man must strive to achieve it while recognizing that it is impossible to reach. Thus it is the only civilization which is constantly growing and constantly reviewing and correcting itself and achieving continuous discoveries..."

"Humanity Lived Thousands of Years Ruminating on the Same Ideas and Living in the Same Conditions, Using the Same Tools... It Could Have Continued Forever In This Way If It Were Not For the Emergence of Philosophical Thinking in Greece."

          'Okaz: "Let me ask you about your complete fascination with Western civilization."

Buleihi: "The light of this civilization is very bright and only a blind person can be oblivious to its brightness. Anyone who is capable of sight and insight is inevitably fascinated by it...We should give credit where credit is due. Has any previous civilization dreamt of the astounding revelations and exact silences and complex technologies [achieved by Western civilization]?

Have previous generations imagined the possibility of opening the human chest or head and conducting intricate surgeries on the heart and brain? Could they imagine the deep understanding of the living cell and the way it is formed... Did they imagine airplanes, cars, telephones, and innumerable accomplishments of this civilization? Would you want us to go back to writing on parchment and papyrus and using wooden sticks for pens, and riding donkeys?

'Okaz: "Sorry, no one has asked you to return to the era of donkeys, but it is necessary to pass historical judgment in a fair and balanced way. You are saying that you want 'to give credit where credit is due,' but, in fact, you deny any credit to whatever existed before Western civilization, and while everybody recognizes that human achievements are cumulative in nature, you negate that axiomatic rule when you speak about Western accomplishments."

Buleihi: "Humanity lived thousands of years ruminating on the same ideas and living in the same conditions, using the same tools and instruments. It could have continued forever in this way if it were not for the emergence of philosophical thinking in Greece in the sixth and fifth centuries BC. Civilizational progress at its current level cannot be achieved by accumulation; rather, it is the outcome of great revolutions in the fields of thought, science, politics, society, and labor...

"What pushes man out of his routine is the struggle of ideas, the freedom of choice, and equal opportunity. The best proof of this is that many peoples today live in the depth of backwardness, despite the availability of science, technology, and ideas. They witness the examples of prosperity, and despite this, these backwards peoples are unable to abandon their trenches and free themselves from their shackles. In other words, they are unable to emulate those who are prosperous and they are completely unable to invent and initiate."

'Okaz: "There is a crucial question in our debate: do you understand by civilization only its material aspect?"

Buleihi: "The most important achievement of Western civilization is the humanization of political authority, dividing it into separate powers, and establishing and keeping a balance between the separate powers. Western civilization has given priority to the individual and subordinated its institutions, laws, and procedures to this principle, whereas in the old civilizations the individual was a cog in a machine."

"Ever Since the End of the Period of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs, Man's Individuality Was Eradicated in Arab History, And His Value Has Been Linked to His Political, Religious, Regional, or Tribal Affiliation."

'Okaz: "A cog in a machine? Do you believe that this is true also of Islamic civilization?"

Buleihi: "We sharply distinguish between Islam in itself and what people do in its name. The great principles of Islam and its sublime doctrines that emphasize and uphold human value and dignity have not had a chance throughout history to establish themselves.

Colonel Neville: Sadly, that little bit is pure balls and bullshit, but I understand that you are still a practicing Muslim and speaking from within the centre of God's Monkey House. So do carry on...

"Ever since the end of the period of the rightly-guided Caliphs, man's individuality was eradicated in Arab history and his value has been linked to his political, religious, regional, or tribal affiliation… The only civilization which acknowledges and respects man as an individual is Western civilization… Behavior in any field is not the outcome of teachings, as such, but rather of practice and actual experience...."

'Okaz: "Has this been the case throughout all of Arab history, in your opinion?"

Buleihi: "Yes, all of Arab history can be characterized in this gloomy way, except for the period of the rightly-guided Caliphs and discrete periods such as the reign of Omar ibn 'Abd Al-'Aziz. One should not confuse the sublime principles and doctrines of Islam with its history, which is full of mistakes, transgression, and tragedies. When the Abbasids overcame the Umayyads, they covered the bodies of the dead with rugs and held a feast over the bodies in a display of vengeance.

When [Caliph] Al-Ma'mun defeated his brother Al-Amin, he flayed him like a lamb. This scene recurs throughout our history. Political power is the pivotal value in Arab culture. In our age, there have been recurrent military coups in the Arab world, in a struggle for power, but not in an attempt to bring about a change for the better. Each successive regime is worse than its predecessor."

'Okaz: "Mr. Buleihi, haven't you read in the history of your people about hundreds of scholars who had significance and impact and whose lives are studied to this day, even though they possessed no power, tribe, or religious affiliation, and who are valued for their scholarship?"

Buleihi: "This is a general statement which is not backed by fact.

Arab history, with the exception of the period of the rightly-guided Caliphs, was dominated by politics. When the Fatimids took over Egypt and North Africa, these areas became Shiite, and when Salah Al-Din Al-Ayyubi [i.e. Saladin] put an end to the Fatimids, he drove out everything that had any relation to Shiism. The same happened when the Safavids converted Iran to Shiism, which then led the Ottomans to act the same way [in imposing Sunnism]. Thus Arab history, or Islamic history, in the wider sense, is the outcome of political ups and downs..."

"Those Exceptional [Arab] Individuals Were Not the Product of Arab Culture, But Rather Greek Culture... We Don't Deserve to Take Pride In Them, Since We Rejected Them and Fought Their Ideas"

'Okaz: "Let me pause here for a moment. You are reducing Islamic history just to political history. Even Islamic political history for all its tragedies, is not as bad as you described it. You also overlook the scientific and cultural aspects of Islamic history, which created a great civilization even while Europe suffered under the rule of feudalism, the Church, ignorance, and backwardness."

Buleihi: "We have inherited certain clichés about our history and the history of other nations without reading our history critically and without reading the history of others fairly and objectively. The luminous Greek civilization emerged in the sixth century BC and reached the peak of its flourishing in the fifth century BC. In other words, Greek civilization emerged many generations before the Islamic one, and Greek philosophy was the source from which Muslim philosophers derived their philosophy.

Those individuals in whom we sometimes take pride, such as Ibn Rushd, Ibn Al-Haytham, Al-Razi, Al-Qindi, Al-Khawarizmi, and Al-Farabi were all pupils of Greek thought. As for our civilization, it is a religious one, concerned with religious law, totally absorbed in the details of what Muslims should do and shouldn't do in his relations with Allah and in his relations with others. This is a huge task worthy of admiration, because religion is the pivot of life. We must however recognize that our achievements are all confined to this great area. Let us not claim then that the West has borrowed from us its secular lights. Our culture has been and continues to be absorbed with questions of the forbidden and the permitted and belief and disbelief, because it is a religious civilization...

'Okaz: "They [the Muslims] learned from the Greek civilization and this is not a fault, this is the way young civilizations are, they learn from previous civilizations and build upon them. Is it expected that they should have abolished the achievements of the Greeks and started from zero?"

Buleihi: "I am not against learning [from others]. What I wanted to clarify is that these [achievements] are not of our own making, and those exceptional individuals were not the product of Arab culture, but rather Greek culture. They are outside our cultural mainstream and we treated them as though they were foreign elements.

Therefore we don't deserve to take pride in them, since we rejected them and fought their ideas. Conversely, when Europe learned from them it benefited from a body of knowledge which was originally its own because they were an extension of Greek culture, which is the source of the whole of Western civilization."
